What is MEFTAL 500MG?

  • MEFTAL 500MG contains Mefenamic acid which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

What MEFTAL 500MG is used for?

It is used to relieve:

  • mild to moderate pain including muscle pains and pain after injury
  • headaches and toothaches
  • heavy menstrual pains and pain following an operation or after childbirth
  • pain due to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthrosis

Talk to your Doctor, if you:

  • are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have a stomach ulcer or bleeding
  • suffer from inflammatory bowel disease
  • have severe problems with kidney or liver
  • have or had a severe heart failure, major heart surgery or previous stroke
  • have or had asthma or wheezing attacks
  • are dehydrated (have been losing fluid through vomiting, diarrhoea or passing too much or too less urine)
  • are alcoholic
  • have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (joint pain, skin change and disorders of other organs)
  • have a problem with the metabolism of sugar in the body
  • have high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
  • are a smoker
  • This medicine is not recommended if you are in the last three months of pregnancy or breast feeding
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • This medicine is not recommended for children
  • Do not drive or operate any machines while taking this medicine as it may cause dizziness, drowsiness, weakness and visual disturbances

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • warfarin, heparin, clopidogrel (used to prevent blood clots)
  • drugs used for the treatment of high blood pressure
  • diuretics (used to make you pass more urine)
  • drugs used for depression
  • digoxin (used for the treatment of heart failure)
  • drugs used to treat infections
  • drugs used for pain or inflammatory conditions
  • mifepristone (used to terminate pregnancy)
  • methotrexate (used to treat certain tumors and other diseases including psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • ciclosporin or tacrolimus (used to suppress the body’s immune system)
  • corticosteroids (used for the treatment of asthma and various inflammatory conditions)
  • probenecid (used in treatment of swollen joints)
  • glibenclamide (used to treat diabetes)
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • This medicine should be swallowed whole with water

If you take more MEFTAL 500MG

  • If you accidentally take much than your prescribed dose, tell your doctor or go to nearest hospital
  • Symptoms of overdose: headache, nausea, vomiting, pain in abdomen, blood in stool, diarrhoea, disorientation, excitation, drowsiness, dizziness, ringing in ear, fainting, occasionally convulsions, acute kidney failure and liver damage

If you forget to take MEFTAL 500MG

  • If you miss a dose, leave it out and take the next dose whenever it is due. After that, just carry on as before
  • Do not take double dose to make up for a forgotten dose

If you stop taking MEFTAL 500MG

  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so
  • allergic reactions: wheeziness, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching (especially affecting your whole body)
  • indigestion or heart burn abdominal pain (pains in your stomach) or other abdominal (stomach) symptoms
  • blood in stools or black tarry stools
  • loose stool (diarrhoea)
  • vomit any blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds
