What is GEMCAL D3?

Introduction:

Gemcal D3 Tablet contains calcium and vitamin D3 which are both essential for healthy bones and teeth. It is used to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels in people who do not get enough calcium from their diets. It may be used to treat conditions caused by low calcium levels such as bone loss (osteoporosis), weak bones (osteomalacia/rickets), decreased activity of the parathyroid gland (hypoparathyroidism), and a certain muscle disease (latent tetany). It may also be used in certain patients to make sure they are getting enough calcium (including women who are pregnant, nursing, or postmenopausal, people taking certain medications such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone).

Calcium plays a very important role in the body. It is necessary for normal functioning of nerves, cells, muscle and bone. If there is not enough calcium in the blood, then the body will take calcium from bones, thereby weakening bones. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Having the right amounts of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus is important for building and keeping strong bones. Studies show that taking calcium and vitamin D3 over a long time can prevent hip and other nonvertebral bone fractures in later life.

Therapeutic uses of Gemcal D3 Tablet:

It is used to treat:

• bone disorders: bone loss (osteoporosis), weak bones (osteomalacia/rickets)
• hypoparathyroidism (decreased activity of parathyroid gland)
• nerve and muscle disorders

Side effects of Gemcal D3 Tablet:

Rare:

• constipation, wind, feeling sick, stomach ache, diarrhea
• skin rash
• hypercalcaemia (too much calcium in your blood)
• hypercalciuria (too much calcium in your urine)

How to manage side effects:

Constipation:

Eat more hig-fibre foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Try to exercise more regularly, for example, by going for a daily walk or run.

Nausea and stomach pain:

Try taking this tablet with, or just after, a meal or snack. Stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food. If you're being sick, try small frequent sips of water to avoid dehydration.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Reducing your dose of lactulose may also help diarrhoea. Do not take any other medicines to treat diarrhoea without speaking to a doctor.

Safety advice:

• Take 2 tablets daily, ideally one tablet taken in the morning and one in the evening or as directed by your physician.
• Swallow the medicine as a whole with a glass of water.
• Do not crush or chew the tablet.
• Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to calcium or vitamin D3 or any other ingredients of this medicine.
• Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you have hypercalcaemia (high levels of calcium in your blood), hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in your urine), kidney disease, sarcoidosis (inflammation that produces lumps of cells in various organs in the body) or glucose intolerance.
• Ask your doctor for advice before taking any medicine, if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Your doctor will decide the suitable dose depending on your condition.
• Do not give this medicine to children under 12 years of age.
• This medicine should not be taken within 2 hours of eating foods rich in oxalic acid (e.g. spinach and rhubarb), phosphate (e.g. bran), or phytic acid (e.g. whole cereals).

Interactions:

Talk to your doctor if you are taking:

• antacids for indigestion
• digitalis drugs (e.g. Lanoxin) used to treat abnormal heartbeat
• diuretics or corticosteroids
• thyroxine, bisphosphonates (used to treat bone disorders)
• iron or fluoride medicines
• antibiotics (tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics)
