what is flupen 125mg/5ml dry suspension?

  • Flupen contains Flucloxacillin which belongs to group of medicine called penicillin. That means they are used in treatment of infections due to Grampositive organisms.

what is flupen 125mg/5ml dry suspension used for?

It is used to:

  •  Skin and soft tissue infections, such as abscesses, boils, cellulitis, impetigo, or infected ulcers, eczema, wounds or burns.
  •  Chest infections, such as pneumonia, lung abscess.
  •  Ear, nose and throat infections, such as sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, quinsy, otitis media and otitis externa.
  •  Bone infections (osteomyelitis)
  •  Urinary tract infections.
  •  Bacterial meningitis.
  •  Blood infections (septicaemia or blood poisoning).
  •  Bacterial infections of the lining of the heart or heart valves (endocarditis).
  •  Bacterial infections of the intestine (enteritis).
  • Preventing bacterial infections during major surgery, eg heart or bone surgery.

To make sure flucoxacillin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you:

  •   have ever had an allergic reaction to a penicillin or cephalosporin-type antibiotic.
  •  have had liver problems or jaundice when taking flucloxacillin in the past.
  •  have liver or kidney problems, are over 50 years of age
  • have a serious underlying illness or have a history of allergies, such as asthma, eczema or hayfever.
  • Flucloxacillin is not known to be harmful when used during pregnancy. It can be used during pregnancy, though as with all medicines it's important to make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant before you start treatment.
  • Flucloxacillin is used to treat infections in babies and it can be used by women who are breastfeeding.
  • It can be used in children under doctor supervision.
  • It is not likely to cause any effects for drivers or machine users however there is no such studies that have been carried out to test the effects of flucoxacillin in drivers and machine users you can consult your doctor for any queries.
  • methotrexate (use in the treatment of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • a blood thinner called warfarin
  • other antibiotics
  • Always take your medicine as advice by your doctor or pharmacist:
  • The tablets should be swallowed whole with one glass of water(200ml)
  • Take your tablets 30-60 minutes before meal.
  • Your doctor will monitor your respond to your medicine and may change your dose if required.
  • Serious side effects are very rare people may have serious allergic reaction ( anaphylaxsis)
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • being sick (vomiting) and diarrhoea
  • bloating and indigestion
  • pale poo with dark pee, yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin - this can be a sign of liver problems
  • bruising or discoloured skin
  • joint or muscle pain that comes on after 2 days of taking the medicine
  •  Aching muscles or joints.
  •  Disturbance in the number of white blood cells or platelets in the blood.
  • Allergic reactions. See a doctor straight away if you get a skin rash or itching, breathing problems or swelling of the face, throat or tongue while taking flucloxacillin.
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (pseudomembranous colitis). Tell your doctor if you get severe, prolonged or bloody diarrhoea during or after a course of flucloxacillin. Don't take a medicine to stop the diarrhoea such as loperamide.
  •  Liver problems such as jaundice or inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), either during treatment, or up to a few months after treatment is finished. See your doctor if you get unexplained itching, sickness and vomiting, abdominal pains, loss of appetite, flu-like symptoms, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, or unusually dark urine.
